Garden View

A sunny view from our hotel in Earl's Court. At the last minute, taking advantage of a hiatus between visitors, we decided to make a quick trip from Paris under the channel to catch the Paul Klee exhibition at the Tate Modern in London--it closes the day after tomorrow.

Klee is among my absolute favorite artists. We had heard mixed things about the show, but it turned out to be superb, in our opinion. It covered most of his career, starting a bit late in 1912, and ending in the year of his death, 1940. The works shown were selected mostly from exhibitions arranged with Klee's participation, and included fewer "old friends" than I would have expected, but the new ones--many from private collections--were of course great to see. I snapped up one of the very last hardback catalogues (with a discount for a tiny tear in the dust jacket), and was pleased to see that its chronological sections are organized by those exhibitions during Klee's lifetime. Here's an excellent review of the show, with especially perceptive commentary.

In the morning we went to the "Wildlife Photographer of the Year" at the Natural History Museum, which blew us away if anything more than usual. At least 50 images are displayed as huge transparencies. Follow the link and be dazzled!
