In this dance of night and day

What do you know of the night? The night that passed? Where are your dreams now? Do you even remember that frightening nightmare, that haunted you into the first twilight? Out of breath, in a shock, there you lay, exhausted, wishing for a good rest, to be taken away by a tender enveloping slumber.

It is, after an early rise, as if the night means what only is to forget about. As quickly as possible. Over, the new day is here. The sky is uncovered. Its dry. Time to go for the swimming round, the exercise, perhaps also a picture. And so it was, for me this morning, that I tried to forget about the night behind me as quickly as possible.

But cycling through the neighbourhood parks underway to the swimming pool, I realized that my transition from night-consciousness into morning-awareness, was reflecting itself in this transitional state of nature, we call “dawn”. Everywhere the night still holds on, in the dark blue of the sky, some stars still visible.

The deep silent shadows between the closedness of the trees, bushes inaccessible, hiding unknowable worlds. You have no idea of what was going on here only a few hours ago. Do the coots know? Or were they sleeping too? Who or what was awake here by that time? Before the first glimmer of early dawn slowly started to spread. And then in the turning of the small parkway in between two ponds:

I saw this twilight blue sky through the dark trees, together with the first gold reflected in the ruffling water mirror of the pond. The night shadows shining back into the unfathomable dark grounds of that shimmering pool. In this dance of night and day, just for a moment I wished the world could turn upside down.
