Waikakaho

Last day of riding and a bigger ride planned today. Cullen Creek to Waikakaho, so basically, crossing the range in between Queen Charlotte Sound and the Wairau Valley. The guide says 27km and 1600m of climbing, which is reasonably big, and daunting … especially after riding for 5 days.

Dropped one car at the end, then around the Linkwater and Cullen creek to start. Overcast and drizzling … not bad, as the first mission is the climb …

2.5 hours and around 900m later we reached the saddle. Wow, wet, lots of pushing and carrying. Roots, ruts, rocks and washouts on the top section. Not a lot of riding going on! The top section felt like a movie set from Lord of the Rings. Amazing. And wet, and cold actually …

So lunch wasn’t too long and then we set off down, hoping for an improvement in the track. Somewhat improved, but with the wet, the rocks and roots were super slippery and uber conservative riding was called for, especially as the large bank on one side … Fun, but in dry conditions it would be loads of fun.

Then down to the valley bottom and out 12.5km to the car. Overall, a fab ride. A bit fitter and the initial climb would be mostly rideable. Next time!

Then back the house, via the Moa brewery. A tasting and explanation of the beers etc, all good. Still not that keen on their beer.

Home, wash bikes, clothes, bike shoes, and body. Pack car, drink beer, Thai takeaways. Early night.

Overall, a fabulous 5 days and 5 very different rides. Lots of fun!
