Montrose

Pitcaple castle was the temporary prison home of the Marquis of Montrose en route to Edinburgh. Despite entreaties from the lady of the castle he declined her offer of escape in case the wrath of the king should be directed at her and hers. Less than a week later James Graham was hung from a gibbet in the Scottish capital before being ritually quartered, his legs and arms being dispatched to Glasgow, Perth, Stirling and Aberdeen as a warning to all those who would change sides in a dirty war of independence.
