Douglas Bader

A detail from the statue of Wing Commander Douglas Bader DSO & Bar DFC RAF which stands on the grassy area next to the Aero Club at Goodwood, West Sussex, near the perhaps better known Motor Circuit. He flew his last mission from this Airfield on 9th August 1941.

He suffered a mid-air collision with a Messerschmitt and was captured by the Germans. He spent most of the war in captivity including time at Colditz.

The statue was unveiled on the 60th anniversary of that last flight, 9.8.2001. The sculptor is Kenneth Potts. It stands 208 cms high and is in bronze.
