The man is Drummond Mayo - artist, playwright, teacher, baker of empire biscuits and rhubarb tarts, grumpy old man.

His beloved dog is Jinty who is now quite blind and deaf, but still seems to love life and her humans.

The pottery head on the shelf is one of Drummond's pieces, although he is better known as a painter.
