The Boule

"Boule" is the Bahasa word for white person. It used to be derogatory but it's commonly used and not intended to be offensive. Arriving in Sukadana as a boule, I stuck out like a sore thumb.

During this community meeting with a local farmer's group, there were children buzzing about. They kept coming to the door to look in at me, and would erupt in giggles every time I looked at them, smiled, winked, etc. It was pretty funny - for a while! I snapped this picture of a few of them cramming in the doorway to have a look at the boule.
