Last Train to Huddersfield

Well, not really; it's just that from tomorrow the concession for bus pass holders to use some trains in South and West Yorkshire comes to an end, so I thought I would have one last free ride. Many had the same idea, and the train was packed. It is ironic that this line was nearly axed in the late 70's due to falling numbers of passengers. It is known as the Penistone Line and is similar to the more famous Settle to Carlisle railway in that is has some fine scenery, dramatic viaducts and a whole social calendar of its own.
Former Prime Minister Harold Wilson is possible Huddersfield's most famous son, and has this fine statue outside the station. Other Huddersfielders include the actor Patrick Stewart, the late entertainer Roy Castle and the poet Simon Armitage. It featured in one of Nick Crane's Town programmes and he was quite rightly very complimentary about it.
