Tortuguero Village, Costa Rica

Playing 'catch-up' with my holiday photos, so these are all being added as 'back-blips' - I'll get the remainder added one day!

Anyhow, Tortuguero National Park is in the north-east of Costa Rica and on the country's Caribbean coast. Tortuguero means 'place of the turtles' and was developed initially as a turtle sanctuary. It still performs that role, but is now also a tourist destination although somewhat off the beaten track. A dirt road takes you only so far, then it's onto the boats in order to reach one's destination. Trips around the National Park to see the varied and marvellous wildlife are also carried out by boat, so it's quite an adventure.

Tortuguero has a small village with one main street, in which are a few shops, cafes and tour companies as well as houses for the local inhabitants. This picture was taken through a colourful doorway leading off that main street.
