On the Road to Creston

Spring sunshine warms our path
melting winter snow into
mountain streams and lakes.

Kid #2 and I were up and gone by 8 AM today. We had 300 miles to go with two ferry crossings and we wanted to arrive well before dark.

Top left: Ferry crossing on Lower Arrow Lake from Needles to Fauquier. It only takes about 10 minutes. There has been a ferry at this location since 1913. It is toll free.

Top right: The Needles ferry is a cable ferry powered by diesel. The crossing is about 1 kilometre in length. It can carry approximately 30 vehicles.

Bottom left: The view from Highway 6 just east of Nakusp.

Bottom right: Loading the Osprey 2000 at Balfour. The ferry holds approximately 80 vehicles. It is the longest free ferry in the world. (about 8 km/5 miles) The crossing takes about 35 minutes and crosses Kootenay Lake from Balfour to Kootenay Bay.
