Sandal Castle

Sandal Castle, in Wakefield, was built in the 13th Century. It finally came to ruin in the Civil War in the 17th Century. So it goes.

The works to make it an accessible historical site are now complete, including this bridge and steps to get over the ditch and up to the top of the mound. It's very nice on a sunny day to stand, safely, on the deck and look out over half of West Yorkshire. Before the development of the West Riding Connurbation you could see Pontefract Castle (and vice versa!) from the top.

When we were small, and the site hardly developed, half the fun of a visit here was the hair-raising climb (and descent) to the top of the grassy hill. Now that fun is restricted and most able-bodies can rise to the top without difficulty or broken bones.

They take the fun out of everything!
