David Budd-Abstract Impressionism 1950's onward

David Budd was a painter who worked mostly in a new art form for its time, post World War II, called Abstract Expressionism. He was influenced by his early friendship with Syd Solomon, and moved to NYC in 1954 and becam friends with early Abstract Expressionists. He was a contemporary and friend with Jackson Polluck and William deKooning, two of the strongest and best know of that genre. His single colored multi textured painting are some of his strongest works. These are difficult to photograph effective, so this is not the one I featured for my blip today. The Easter Island Series of which the show had 4, are very strong. I feel this one is also one of his strong works, He later moved to Paris and painted and collaborated with artists and famous writers. His work ins in MOMA, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim and Corcoran Museums, all prominent museum collections. After his death, many of his paintings were donated by his family to Ringling College of Art and Design, who hold quite a large collection of this work. He did not have an agent to represent him after his death and so donating them to the College was a good move for preservation of his work. The Ice House, a new contemporary cutting edge gallery, is showcasing this respective, and sales of his work will benefit Ringling's Scholarship program, certainly a worthy cause. The show is a wonderful showing of some monumental work and a chance to see some fine art in our local region. The Ice House is bringing exciting shows to our region and is to be commended for their presentation and strong quality shows being offered. Wishing them much success as they expand the quality of work being offered in the Sarasota Art scene. The future SMOA (Sarasota Museum of Art) will one day expand on these type of wonderful offerings. It will be a wonderful addition to the Sarasota Art scene and certainly a prominent museum of contemporary art.
