The Inn at Ardgour

Great day out in mixed weather, but some spells of sunshine and blue skies. Drove round Fort William to come back along Loch Eil and Loch Linnhe with glorious views of the Nevis range at times. We usually do this circular trip the other way round, having lunch at the Inn at Ardgour, pictured here, next to the Corran Narrows on the western side of Loch Linnhe. This time we came back late afternoon across the ferry, all 200 yards of it, and had tea at Ballachulish Dragon’s Tooth instead.

This inn (and ferry) have been here for hundreds of years. First a rowing boat, now a modern car ferry, taking folk across to the once little known Ardnamurchan peninsular. Today there is an ongoing dispute about charges, currently £7.90 for a car, single fare, and its occupants. Apparently the fare rose 3 times in a year, and the West Lochaber communities feel this will be an unfair burden on local people. There is a season ticket at £69.50 for 30 journeys, which wouldn’t last long for someone going to daily work on the other side. It is a dilemma. No resolution yet.
