Morello Cherry

We bought this house in 1995 from Ivy Smith, a painter whom, it turned out, knew my father from the days when he used to teach at Norwich School of Art. Ivy was quite a gardener and had planted this morello cherry and fan trained it against the gable end of the barn. It looks glorious when it comes into flower. All I have to do is maintain it. It is a little sporadic in its fruiting but usually every other year it is covered in morello cherries which are a little bitter. But they make the most marvellous jam, or preserved in brandy with a little sugar, they are a delicious dessert.
