Black Cottonwood...

...also known as Western Balsam Poplar, an unassuming tree with a heady fragrance when the leaves emerge in spring. We first smelt this one while examining an ancient plum tree in Norton Disney churchyard. At first Alex couldn't believe that the scent was coming from leaves rather than the blossom, but once sniffed he was smitten. He asked whether we could plant one in the garden, but as they eventually grow very large and have moisture-seeking invasive roots, I think this would be a big mistake!

Another successful day botanising in Lincolnshire. I do love some of the village names - Norton Disney, Mavis Enderby and Silk Willoughby sound to me like the cast of a twenties silent movie!!
