Dunaverty

Day 2 of our trip in Kintyre. We got up early (partly due to wanting to make the most of being away, partly due to the man in the next tent snoring!). Had a discussion about how simple modern tents are as we took ours down and packed up the car.
We had planned to drive down to the tip of the peninsula today, stopping at the beach by Machrahanish and having lunch in Campbeltown.
After lunch we headed on to Southend as LH was looking forward to seeing Dunaverty Castle, one of the oldest and most important castle sites in Scotland. There was surprisingly little to see, even for someone keen to scramble all over! RH stayed on the slope to sunbathe.
We decided to drive to the Mull of Kintyre lighthouse on the west coast, stopping to see St Columba's footprints and Keil caves. Our 1970s OS map showed some very tight hairpin bends at the end of the road to the lighthouse, thankfully it's been closed since as these were ridiculously steep and pretty dangerous. Very tranquil views over the Mull of Kintyre with Northern Ireland visible in the distance.
Homeward bound after this, with a wee stop in Inverary for tea.
