Exercise Tiger

In 1944 as part of the build-up to the D-Day landings Exercise Tiger
took place at Slapton Sands in Devon. Over the course of
two days one of the biggest disasters of the Second World War took
place, resulting in the deaths of 946 American Servicemen from either
friendly fire or as a result of the manoeuvres being discovered and
attacked by German E-boats. This Sherman Tank was recovered from the
sea bed in 1984 and now stands on one end of the sands as a memorial to
those lost.
