Neuschwanstein Castle

King Ludwig did not plunder the Bavarian state coffers, but his obsessive passion for extravagant building projects drove him into bankruptcy and became an acute embarrassment to his cabinet. His death occurred in highly suspicious circumstances, but officially it was a suicide.

Neuschwanstein was not the most expensive of his projects. The sumptuous and delightful palace of Herrenchiemsee, built on a lake island as a partial replica of the palace at Versailles, cost twice as much and remained unfinished on Ludwig's death. One of the great experiences of Europe... but eclipsed in the public's imagination by this building of little virtue other than its wonderful views.

This photo was taken in March 1966, I have no record of its precise date and have thus had to make a guess.
