Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

A noble, but lonely, fir.

At the entrance to to the Sands of Forvie nature reserve there is a small plantation of lofty pine trees, currently noisy with nesting herons. Among the dark and austere pines there is just one fir with beautiful bright red male cones strutting its stuff. I'm not totally sure but I think it is a noble fir Abies procera. This colourful tree standing out from its drab neighbours put me in mind of that old song I'm a lonely petunia in an onion patch.
