Stained-glass window (original), east transept, St. Mary’s Cathedral.
This cathedral has many wonderful modern stained-glass windows that were designed for a recent renovation. The very large transept windows are "from the the earlier cathedral built in 1885 and may even date back to an earlier cathedral from the 1870's." [From the brochure 'Religious Artworks in St. Mary's Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.]
A matrix is a surrounding medium or structure. This window has a wood frame surrounding the entire window and dividing it into five tall sections. Each portion of the window contains a lead matrix that holds the glass in place. Finally, there is a conceptual matrix. Across the top half are the Four Evangelists or Gospel writers: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The bottom half depicts Mary the Mother of the Word at left and St. Jerome, the translator of the Greek and Hebrew scriptures into Latin, on the right.
