Art multiplied

Artist talk by Jackie K. Johnson at Laura Russo Gallery.

I have found that listening to artists talk about their work multiplies my appreciation of it, so I try to attend as many of these as I can. Today there were two women artists introducing their joint exhibition at Laura Russo. I had hoped to show them both, but the light on Margot Voorhies Thompson (shown a few days ago here) was not conducive to portrait photography. I decided to show as much as I could of Jackie's art — definitely worth a larger look.

It's worth noting that Jackie is not as placid as she appears here! Even seated, she is animated and her arms are continually in motion. She has a wonderful smile, which I captured in a photo so blurry that I decided, reluctantly, to give it a pass.

"Jackie K. Johnson has a long tradition of using a variety of evocative, totemic forms and sophisticated color to delve into the twists and turns of life. Her latest exhibition explores internal and external landscapes through vibrantly colored and densely composed imagery, inspired in part by the time she spends fishing on Oregon’s waterways. The mindset of fishing calls for patience and reflection, as well as detailed observation and quick action. Johnson’s paintings delve into these experiences, and are made of compositions within compositions, suggesting the layers of life above and below the water’s surface." — from the gallery website
