The Bridge Builders

Despite a setback with recent flooding in the Taylor River the Blenheim Railway Society’s bridge building project is progressing nicely. During the last few weeks earthmoving equipment cleared all the shingle and debris from around the piers that had accumulated during the flooding See here…….. The machinery then went on to remove excess shingle and contour and smooth the riverbed approaches to the bridge. Eight concrete slabs have been laid across from pier to pier.
After the Marlborough District Council finishes a training wall built of heavy rock, and parts of the bridge are filled in with concrete the railway tracks can be laid on the bridge.
When I walked the dogs along this stretch of the river this morning a mini-conference was taking place between the consulting engineer, contractors and the Railway Society volunteers. This is an exciting project and it is interesting to follow its progress over time.
