An interesting day of research yesterday (even worth the evening headquake due to staring at a computer screen for hours) when the firstborn vaguely wondered when the house they're hopefully about to buy was built. Never one to turn down a challenge, I thought I'd give it a go and managed to find out it was at least pre 1890 and discovered a great (free) online resource in the process here at the University of Leicester.....675 digitised (and searchable) historical directories covering England and Wales no less! With their help I managed to find (unusually named so they were easier to find) residents on the street in question then used my (much underused recently) Ancestry subscription to access census records for the actual house.....and it turns out that the firstborn might not be the first Sarah Jane to live at No 38, all being well;-)

EDIT: There's something similar in the directories line for Scotland here for anyone interested......
