Skippers Canyon

Awesome day spent in Skippers Canyon.

Skippers appears to be named after "Skipper" Malcolm Duncan who was one of the first prospectors to work in the Shotover River valley. He discovered a lode near where a tributary (now  called Skippers Creek) flowed into the Shotover River. This location soon became known as Skippers Point or Skippers.

Gold was discovered in the Shotover River in 1862, it came to be regarded the richest river in the world.

Today we saw Skippers Point Cemetery where hubby's Great Great Grandfather was buried in May 1886. He was a stonemason working in the area, possibly at Johnston's Otago Hotel. We were also able to see the remains of the hotel.

A trip along ghe Skippers Road is well worth it for the scenery and the incredible engineering work.

What an amazing day, scenery and history in a very remote location of Central Otago.
