Windermere from Orrest Head

This view is taken from the summit of the destination of today's walk - Orrest Head above Windermere. It was this walk and this summit that changed the life of one AW (Alfred Wainwright)and countless thousands of fell walkers who followed in his footsteps and used his guidebooks since that day.

He describes it as "our first ascent in Lakeland, our first sight of mountains in tumultuous array across glittering waters, our awakening to beauty"

He was not wrong. Despite the haze, the weather was sunny and warm and the mountains and waters easily identifiable. Popular too, with lots of people on the summit, enjoying the weather.

After a quick shower we were on our way to see Hawesmead - a property we were interested in just south of Kendal. While it had superb views from the front terrace and sun room the accommodation did not suit. So we wrote that one off the list.

From Hawkesmead we travelled to the RSPB Reserve at Leighton Moss for a bit of lunch and a scone (for me) before watching birds at the various bird tables and hides on the Reserve.

On our way home we stopped at Asda to pick up lamb chops and quiches for dinners and broke the self serve till. After taking my card out as instructed the screen froze. The assistant said to take the stuff and they would ring in the morning when they saw whether or not the transaction had gone though.

Scores on the scone:

Size: has to be big 3
Shape: pleasing to the eye, top, bottom and sides 3
Colour lightly browned 3
Texture that craggy bit around the side to show it has risen 3
Breaking open tears apart easily 3
Smell must make your mouth water 2

Taste and flavour:
Crunch first bite impact 2
Churn how it breaks down when chewing 3
Crumb how well it holds together when putting on cold butter 3
Initial taste the impact of the first mouthful 2
Full taste how the flavour develops with eating 2 (overpowered by too much cream)

29/44, good but the taste and flavour did not match up with the very promising physical appearance.
