Bloody Mary

During the short reign of Bloody Mary, 1553-1558, 283 Protestants were burnt for their faith and for their refusal to attend the superstitious and idolatrous mass. 62 of them came from Kent and one - Margery Polley came from Pembury. She was burned alive in Tonbridge in 1555.

This drinking trough on Pembury Green was erected in her memory, paid for by public subscription in July 1909 .

I found myself wandering round Pembury looking for something interesting to blip after a quick trip to the garden centre became a day trip to Pembury when I dropped in on my old neighbours and chatted all afternoon.
