Tiny love god

This is a male Small Blue, Cupido minimus, the smallest British butterfly. The female has not even a hint of blue on its brown/grey wings. Quite a few have hatched over the last few days and are flying at the nature reserve. We thought this species was lost from the whole valley a few years ago. Then we cleared a lot of scrub and willow trees from some old chalk pits and this provided perfect conditions for a revival of Kidney Vetch, the larval foodplant. A few Small Blues found these plants three years ago and we've had a strengthening small colony ever since.
