Snorkelling Wrigglers

The local builder keeps his plant in our yard and the dumper truck bucket is full to the brim with water. The surface is at my eye-level. I took a pic from above and noticed pin-point breaks in the meniscus where wiggling worm-like things were congregating.

How have I gone through life with out knowing that mosquito larvae have snorkels with which to breathe? These siphons are near their rear ends. They swim using their mouth brushes or by wriggling but have to come to the surface to get air.

I put some in a glass and brought them indoors to photograph them. I tipped them in the pond with Barry, Maureen and Peter afterwards. :)
