In Victoria’s time the journey from Windsor to Ballater took some two days and involved travelling a total of 589 miles at speeds ranging from 25mph at night to 35mph during daylight hours. The locomotives of the day were quite capable of reaching speeds in excess of 60mph however Her Royal Highness had stipulated the lower speeds due to her anxiety about the safety of this new mode of transport.
