On the old Roman northern frontier

Today we headed South and got as far as Hadrian's wall, the old Roman frontier. At the fort at Birdoswald the Romans were putting on a master class in Roman cooking. Here one of the cooks is extolling the virtues of that old favourite cooking sauce garam. It is made from fermented fish and other sea creatures; his expression says it all.
