The Wallington Way

Wallington on a Summers Day

People are doing what the English middle classes do - a day out in a National Trust property. Everybody is enjoying a little bit of warmth and sun. We did the alternative version and walked for 4 miles around the surrounding paths and fields. It is nice to have the option.

Apparently, the Trevellyan family who are the original and also current owners along with the Nat Trust were strong supporters and advocates for socialism. There is even a communist flag flying at the back of the building. As a consequence, the patriarch Trevellyan was ostracized by his rich neighbours such as the Percys (and Husseys) - who were against social reform such as paying employees child benefits etc.

Not much changes really, in our very material and materialist world. However, well done Trevellyan for his socialist principles and qualities. However, what would he think in terms of his mansion now being swarmed by the middle classes !

p.s. we are all middle class now apparently.....
