Hay Festival ends on high note

After ten days of rain, mud and overcast weather today the sun shone and people threw off their winter clothes and enjoyed the sunshine.

I heard of one family camping where the mother said she had thrown the children's wellingtons over the hedge and vowed never to come back again.

Quite frankly I think that was a bit drastic but this year has highlighted a number of problems with bad weather top of the list. The fact is that the Festival has outgrown the town and the site.

Today ended on a light note with Helen Fielding, author of Brigitte Jones Diaries.
She says strangers are coming up to her and accusing her of killing off Colin Frith in her latest book, Mad About the Boy.

She is a great comic writer and it quickly became obvious that far from Brigitte Jones being an invented character it is in fact Helen Fielding.
She arrived wearing high heeled wellington boots with the temperature in the ten soaring. By the time she got to the book signing she had thrown them off and was barefoot.
