A week in Eskdale wouldn't be complete without a trip on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway.

We joined the train at Fisherground and traveled down to Ravenglass where we picnicked next to the estuary. We got back on the train as far as Muncaster Mill and then walked through the woods on the shoulder of Muncaster Fell to Murthwaite where we waited in the sunshine for the next train north. It was boggier than we expected, but we negotiated our way through. We had brief encounters with Green-veined White, Speckled Wood, Small Heath, Holly Blue and Orange-tip butterflies as we walked.

For our final expedition we alighted at The Green and walked up through Eskdale Green to the area of woodland known as Giggle Alley, wherein lies a secret Japanese Garden.

So secret was it that we stumbled around the wood for half an hour before we found it, the beginnings of a restored garden originally created a hundred years ago. This seemed the perfect time of year to view it, the Acers in particular being near their peak. This scene captures the layers of colour, and the small bridge without which no Japenese garden would be complete.

Finally, a short walk across the open fell of Eskdale Common back to Fisherground. Two pairs of little legs which had earned their supper.
