Crystal Maze

I don't let the rain get me down, I think of it as an opportunity to shoot flowers, bugs and webs bejewelled with droplets.

This juvenile labyrinth spider's web has been transformed into a crystal maze. It has a funnel-shaped entrance which leads to a tangle of tunnels. The female will hide her egg sac deep within. I can tell that my pic is of a juvenile by the red colouration of its carapace.

The spider hides in the tunnel and waits. It has special sensory hairs on its legs which enable it to detect prey in the vicinity. Grasshoppers are a favourite food.
