D-Day

Ooooh it was difficult to choose which picture to blip today. I had so many nice ones to choose from.

My thesis had to be uploaded before 12 noon today. I uploaded it already yesterday, but I still checked the University Intranet this morning before work, to make sure everything looked right and it had really been uploaded. All looked fine and I had an email at about 1 pm confirming that my thesis had been uploaded in time and been accepted. Phew!

The boys and I celebrated our re-gained freedom by going to the beach after work - to relaxe and have fun. Ahhhh it was wonderful. We really enjoyed it.

I have decided to take this weekend off before starting the work preparing to defend my thesis and I am looking forward to it.

We are home now, have had dinner and are ready for a restful evening in front of the TV. NO SCHOOL BOOKS :-D

For the first time ever, Denmark has officially taken part in the anniversary of the landing of allied forces on the beaches of Normandy during the Second World War.

At a ceremony, which was held in France today, the 800 Danish sailors who took part in the D-Day invasion 70 years ago, was officially recognised.

Due to its co-operation with Nazi Germany during the first three years of the war, Denmark has up until now been denied an official allied recognition, but a diplomatic offensive by a group of Danish resistance fighters, the Royal House, the Danish embassy in France and NATO secretary-general Anders Fog Rasmussen has led to the Danes being recognised as allies in WWII.

6,300 Danish navy sailors fought on the side of the Allies in WWII. 1,072 sailors lost their lives – 100 of whom were under the age of 17.
(However, almost the same number of soldiers, some 6,000 in total, fought for Germany earlier in the conflict. About a quarter of those were part of the German-speaking minority in southern Jutland).

A very important and moving day for the sailors, who are still alive.
