Chattri

I blipped a picture of the Chattri - the memorial to Indian soldiers who died in the First World War - back in December. But today saw the annual service of remembrance, on a glorious summer's day high on the South Downs above Brighton.

The Chattri is built on the spot where the bodies of Indian soldiers who died in the hospitals in the city - including the Pavilion - were cremated. Every year there is a service, attended by both the great and the good from the city as well as visitors from all over the country. It's both a solemn and an informal occasion; an act of remembrance but also a celebration of the city's cultural diversity, followed by tea in a local school.

At a time when we seem to have become in some ways a less generous and welcoming society, it was a privilege to be able to attend.
