Louis' Flower

One of the attractive flowers growing in damp areas now is the yellow flag iris. It is especially desirable for dragonfly larvae but I'm not certain why the beetle was exploring the flower.
According to legend when the 5th century King of the Franks was repelling the Romans he decided to replace the 3 toads on his flag with 3 irises, hence flag iris. Then when Louis VII was fighting the Crusades he used them as his symbol - Fleur-de-Lys (Flower of Louis)
Another name sometimes used was Jacob's Sword after the long narrow leaves. The iris was used as a plant dye with the flowers giving yellow, the leaves green and the roots black colours. Also ink was made with the roots and an iris hanging at the door supposedly warded off evil spirits.
