Columbian Black-tailed Deer on San Juan Island

Today we went over to Lime Kiln State Park to look for whales, and on the way we ran into this Columbian black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus). They were so cute, nibbling on the grasses beside the road.

Many of the physical characteristics of black-tailed deer are similar to those of the larger mule deer. The tail is broader and the backside of the tail is covered with dark brown hair that grades to black near the tip. When alarmed or fleeing from danger, the tail may be raised, displaying the broad, white underside. Adult black-tailed deer bucks weigh 140 to 200 pounds and adult does weigh 90 to 130 pounds.

While we visited Lime Kiln Lighthouse, I spotted a pair of Oyster Catchers down by the ocean's edge. You must see these two photos...they are called "anyone for a manicure?" and "fifth position at the ballet bar". Sorry, but I couldn't resist!!
