Birthplace of linoleum

This somewhat weather beaten plaque mounted near the waters of the Firth of Forth, marks the setting where Michael Nairn established the very first of his factories manufacturing floor covering.

He went on to create much larger factories in Kirkcaldy, one of which was recently demolished and was the subject of a number of Blips from me. He made Kirkcaldy the centre of manufacturing linoleum for the entire British Empire, and beyond.

Much of traditional manufacturing has gone from the town, but it was heartening recently to read of Scottish Government plans to rebuild around new industries the production capability of Scotland.
