Sweet Potato!

A few days ago I blipped the young Backpackers picking Basil in a local vegetable farm. I am absolutely amazed at the extent of the fruit and vegetable industry in the Bundaberg region. You only have to drive a could of kilometres from home and you will find yourself smack bang in the middle of vast rows of zucchini, pumpkin, tomato, sweet potato, melons, macadamias, in fact you name it and they grow it in this part of the world.

Today we were driving back from the beachside suburb of Bargara and I had decided to take an image of the vast fields of zucchini. We pulled up alongside a sign that said..........Sweet Potato $2 a bag. Can you believe it. We were very happy with our purchase, a huge bag of freshly dug up sweet potato. I decided that this required further investigation and wandered (camera in hand) to the back of the house.

What I discovered was just amazing. A whole industry was going on back there and the young Backpackers had just finished digging up a whole field of Sweet Potato. They were more than happy for me to take a photo. The Backpackers have a great reputation with the farmers in the region. They find them very hard working and diligent. The farmers would in fact be in deep trouble without this army of workers. They are so heavily reliant on the young tourists.

Can't wait for tea tonight, guess what we're having???
