Well Dressing

I have had an exhausting couple of months and decided to take a couple of weeks off from the world! It was very refreshing and the only thing I have done is to get tanned by the sun.

It was lovely just enjoying time with some of my family, doing some gardening in the sun and generally relaxing. It's back to reality now and a busy schedule here in Derbyshire.

This is a shot of a well dressing in our village. It is made entirely of flower petals. the dressings decorate the village for a week during June. Other villages decorate their wells too during the months of June & July.

The origins of the tradition are said to lie in pagan tradition or in giving thanks for the purity of the water drawn from certain wells during the period of the Black Death. It has been said to have originated in Tissington, Derbyshire in 1349.

Whatever the origins, they are certainly worth seeing and it is great to see communities keeping these ancient traditions alive.

Thank you for your comments whilst I've been away from the world. They are always appreciated.
