Life in Newburgh on Ythan

New kid on the block

Yet another day, yet another dolphin. This is Oceanic Dance, the work of artist Danielle Callaghan. According to the publicity material, this dolphin was "inspired by the wide variety of culture and beauty found in Aberdeen from The Jazz Festival, science and scenery, all are represented in ‘wave’ shapes, creating movement. The artist used waves to reflect not only the dynamic quality of Aberdeen’s culture, but the important presence of the sea with which the city has a long relationship."

Oceanic Dance normally lives next to the potting shed in the University's Botanic Gardens. Not the best habitat for a dolphin and so I bundled her/him into the back seat of the car and headed off to Newburgh on Ythan. As you can see Oceanic Dance has settled in well and is loving his/her new home and performing acrobatic dances for the villagers.

(For those of you not in the know, Aberdeen city is hosting the Wild Dolphins project, which has seen 50 spectacular life-sized fibreglass sculptures of bottle-nosed dolphins – usually spotted off the North-east coast – popping up all over town. Organised by Wild in Art with The ARCHIE Foundation, the official charity of the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, and Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC), the dolphins can be seen until August 29, before being auctioned to raise money for the two charities. Earlier, I blipped Skipper Dolphin and Doric Dolphin.)
