A Farewell to Muirfield

I've been a volunteer at the Adult Literacy & Numeracy group that meets at the Muirfield Community Education Centre in Cumbernauld for the past eight years. It's only a couple of hours a week - no big deal - but, when we finished for our summer break on Tuesday, it was like the end of an era.

In a past life, Muirfield CEC was a primary school and still has a primary school look & feel about it - as well as being somewhat run down and not fit for purpose.

Over the summer and autumn the present building will be demolished and a new 'Community Enterprise Hub' will be built. This 'Hub' will have offices, rooms for let by community groups, a cafe, nursery, and such like. What it won't have is a dedicated Adult Literacy resource base as we have in the current building - the service where I am a volunteer will have to hire out the rooms like everyone else and we won't have our books, worksheets, dictionaries, etc. 'on tap' as we have had until now.

We're not even sure yet when the current building will close, the new building be available for use or where the services will be provided from in the interim.

But I'm only a volunteer and, as I said, I'm only there for two hours a week. So it's not really my problem. Out with the old, in with the new, as they say. And we'll cope, for that's what we do. But one last photo, for old time's sake.
