"In a Rocky Place"

Out walking I spotted this single flower growing all alone on the embankment of the mountain track. All alone yet there were plenty more growing in batches by the roadside.
Why this one decided to grow there is one of natures mysteries and one that frustrates my efforts as an amateur gardener. Why do plants grow of their own accord,in situations that I would deem unsuitable, yet when I plant them in good soil, well watered and fed the die on me!
I like the contrast of the texture of the rock and the blue of the flower.
