Tomb of the Eagles, South Ronaldsay, Orkney

A day driving to the south of the Mainland. Here is CJ at the entrance to the tomb, working out how best to get in. There is a skateboard type trolley and a rope to pull yourself along, or crawl in - kneepads provided. Torches inside and three skylights. The sun shines up the entrance during the summer months. Several chambers inside, so interesting to compare with Maeshowe.

Before the mile walk to the tomb, we met Jock and Granny, both around 5,000 years old. Two skulls found amongst thirty, along with human bones, and the bones and talons of around 14 white tailed sea eagles. We were able to handle several artefacts including jewellery, talons, buttons and axe heads. Excellent information session about this Neolithic site, run by the family of the man who discovered the tomb. A good walk along the cliffs too, with benches to enjoy the views. I noted all where firmly tied down, as I expect it can get seriously windy along here. I recommend a visit, around 20 mile drive south from Kirkwall. More information here.

Earlier in the day, we visited the The Italian Chapel beside the First Churchill Barrier on island of Lambholm. Special to have the place to ourselves. Built by Italian Prisoners of War during WW2. Every detail inside was created by them, even light fittings made out of tin cans. A true work of art, and a very special place of worship. We also stopped at each of the four barriers, to read the information panels and take photographs.
