Game Night

I used the camera timer to capture this blip of our family foursome, finishing up a game of Whoonu tonight before tucking the kids in bed. Whoonu is a game where the cards each list a verb or noun, such as "snowboarding" or "popsicles" and in turn, the players pick a card from their hand that they think another player will like the best. Of the submitted cards, the featured player ranks these items first, second, and third, and points are scored accordingly. It was pretty cute because other than having to read E's cards for him (and help A occasionally, though she was pretty good at being able to sound things out), everyone could participate fairly independently. It was clear that both kids are old enough to think about another person separately from themselves, and know that person's likes/dislikes separate from their own. It was also funny to watch the kids rank-order their cards, sometimes in ways that surprised us!

The game was a nice close to a pretty laid-back day. A's sleepover ended mid-morning after our specified chocolate-chip-pancake breakfast, and then we headed to the airport to pick up my parents, upon their return from a recent trip. We shared lunch with them by the airport and then returned home to relax for awhile - including a nap on the couch for me! We took the kids up to ride bikes at A's school playground in the late afternoon, made dinner at home, and then played our game. I'm often guilty of overbooking our family's schedule, and I've been trying so far this new year to be more mindful of that, particularly on the weekends. So far I think it's working, and today was an example of embracing that unstructured time.
