The Edge of the Wold

Lavender bee

Our lavender is having a good year, perhaps because it has been uncharacteristically warm and dry. The honeybees love it too. This one is about to land, the tongue is already primed to sip nectar, and the antennae are sensing whether the flower has been visited by another bee recently.

I had a meeting in Preston in the morning, but the train from Arnside stopped in Lancaster and we were told with no explanation that the train was terminating there. It turned out that there was no driver to take the train onto Preston. Northern Rail: it's trains and practices are hardly changed since the 1970s. This meant being late for the meeting which was a little disconcerting as I was giving a presentation, second on the agenda. But I got there a minute late, and all was well. The trains worked well on the way home, and I was able to enjoy a little afternoon sunshine watching the busy bees.

And now Gus has that look of longing, he needs his evening walk. Who knows there may be a sunset - too late to blip though.
