Ring of Brodgar, Orkney

A perfect stone circle, from the Neolithic period. Originally 60 stones, 27 remain upright, with another 9 on the ground. It lies on a peninsula between the Lochs of Stenness and Harray. The hills of Hoy in the distance.

After a couple of rounds of the stones, lining up our angles for shadows and sunlight, we enjoyed a walk around the RSPB reserve there. Then on to check out The Ness of Brodgar Excavations. The team have just begun a six week dig, slowly revealing a huge Neolithic temple complex.

From here to the Cliffs at Yesnaby, watching the seabirds, and a walk along to the huge sea stack, The Castle. It is impressive, especially when you realise there is a hole developing near the base. Seemingly climbers practice here before scaling The Old Man of Hoy.

Sunny today, but very windy. Starting to pack up, as we head off on the ferry tomorrow back to Scotland. Just hope it isn't too rough a crossing.
