A day out in Burgundy

As I write this, the rain is coming down and thunder is rumbling around, but we were fortunate, as it kept dry for our day out. Most of the day was somewhat overcast, but that was good as it kept the temperatures down - yesterday we reached a high of 34C (about 93F)! Our principal destination was the hilltop village of Vezelay, with its wonderful basilica, a monastic church, dating from the 12th c., and a masterpiece of Burgundy Romanesque art, known especially for the intricately carved capitals and the tympanum over the main door in the narthex. We took a break for lunch and then walked around the remains of the ramparts. We then moved on to the nearby village of Pierre Perthuis, located in a picturesque site above the River Cure and known for its two bridges, one am old stone bridge, and right behind it the 19th century road bridge. Our last stop was the charming village of Noyers sur Serein, where my blip was taken, a little further north, with many 15th c. half-timbered houses, numerous towers along the line of the ramparts, and a wonderful lavoir (wash-house), all bedecked with hanging baskets.
