Charaxes jasius, The Two Tailed Pasha

A long steady climb on winding roads into the hills took us most of the morning. We eventually came to a mountain pass where we had a fantastic view of the western side of the north cape. Above us there was a rocky outcrop where we came across the round tower of a disused windmill, a shrine to the Virgin Mary and a substantial cairn.
A large butterfly with a powerful flight pattern came winging by, a dark brown-black with tawny orange bands on its wings. I had already seen this one in flight a couple of times but never still and on the ground. I couldn't believe my luck when it settled on the cairn near me for a minute or two with its wings closed.

The Two Tailed Pasha is so called because of the distinctive pointed swallowtails on its hindwings and is also known as the Foxy Emperor.
